June 25, 2022
4:30 pm EDT
Live from St. John’s in the Village
218 W 11th St. New York, NY 10014
"Second Soprano tells the story of musical traditions in my family and pays tribute to my late sister, legitimate soprano Barbara Hightower on her birthday,” says Cheryl Warfield, a professional opera singer with credits from Broadway to the Lyric Opera of Chicago and founder of ADVANCE-MORE Opera. Barbara was a phenomenal singer with an extensive vocal range who sang diverse types of music from semi-classical to contemporary gospel with great abandon. She was always in great demand for weddings, funerals, regular church services, and special occasions. The compelling story compares the passions and career choices of two sisters through narrative and song. The program features music from the Black church including spirituals by Burleigh, Johnson, and Bonds, sacred classics Barbara sang like “The Lord is My Light,” and some of Cheryl’s signature arias by Verdi and Puccini.
Cheryl will be accompanied by pianist Olga Gurevich.
This is the first annual fundraiser for ADVANCE-MORE Opera, a 501(c)(3) opera company that focuses on diversity and inclusion through live performances, educational programs, and community outreach.
For over 20 years, ADVANCE-MORE Opera has mounted dozens of free public performances, educational workshops, and no-cost community choral training to hundreds of young people, adults, and seniors. This fundraiser represents MORE Opera’s efforts to build capacity and provide more programming to underserved communities throughout the five boroughs.
ADVANCE-MORE Opera is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) opera company.
